One of the lesser known stories told in American black history, "Henry Box Brown: A Musical Journey" recounts true story of the life of Henry Brown, an enslaved black man living in Virginia in the 1850s.
After toiling for years in a Richmond tobacco factory, Brown's life changed dramatically when his wife and three children were suddenly sold to a slave owner in North Carolina. Brown vowed then to escape his enslavement and find his family.
With the help of a free black man, a white preacher, and a white slave owner, Brown eventually escaped his confines by shipping himself across the country inside a 2-by-3-foot dry goods box.
Brown went on to become a well-respected speaker for the Anti-Slavery Society and sold thousands of copies of his story, which later was adapted into a stage show which toured Europe to rave reviews.
